Margaret Olsen : Director of Faith Formation

Margaret Olsen

Director of Faith Formation

Hi! My name is Margaret Olsen and I am the Director of Faith Formation here at Montgomery United Methodist Church.  My family and I have been members of MUMC since moving here from Alabama over 23 years ago.  We first visited Montgomery when my  youngest son Mark started preschool at Montgomery Methodist Children’s Center in the fall of 1994 and our family transferred our membership to MUMC that spring.  In the fall of 1997  I  began working at the Children’s Center as a teacher and in 2000 became the Director, a position I  continue to hold. I have also served on various committees at our church over the years and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible school.  I have three adult children, Kristen and her husband Matt, , Charlie and his wife Meghan,  and Mark and his girlfriend Theresa.  I am also blessed to have two precious grandchildren, Liam and Lexi.  All the family lives in Maryland and I get to see them often!  Nothing brings me more joy than to have all my children and grandchildren together with me!!

As DFF at MUMC I  oversee, with a lot of support,  in the Christian Education program, including Sunday School for children and adults and  the nursery  as well as small groups.  I  also provides support for various ministries in the church, such as the Health Ministry,  the Sports Ministry, the Follow Him  program and Vacation Bible School. Since I’ve only been in the position about 8 months I’m still learning but love being able to be a part of so many vital ministries here at MUMC! I especially enjoy working with our children, and have felt called to this ministry ever since I was a teenager and  began teaching a 5 year old Sunday School class  at 16. The pure joy and love of God that young children have is truly a sign to me of how God’s Love shines in all of us!

I am truly blessed to be a part of the MUMC family and the Children’s Center family and continue to pray for God’s guidance in my life as I follow where He leads me!

Angela Small : Chancel Choir Director/Organist

Angela Small

Chancel Choir Director/Organist

In June 2018 we welcomed Angela Small as our new organist and Chancel Choir director.

Angela considers herself to be from Charlotte, North Carolina, but was born in Wisconsin and has also lived in Illinois.  In 2016 she graduated cum laude from Michigan Technological University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and with a minor in mathematics.  But along with her major interest in these sciences, she has a strong background in Christian music.

As Angela explains, "My parents are both musicians. My dad plays trombone, and my mom has a degree in music education. Following in my mom's footsteps, I started playing piano as soon as I could reach the keys and began taking piano lessons at age 7.  My interest grew even stronger when I joined school band on clarinet in fourth grade, accompanied my first musical my junior year of high school, and began playing sacred music professionally in college."

Before coming to our church she was Director of Music Ministries at Hope Lutheran Church in College Park, and prior to that she was a church organist and pianist at different churches in the Houghton, Michigan, area.  Over the years she has also participated in numerous high school and college ensembles, playing clarinet, tenor saxophone, and piano.  Angela has also taught private music lessons on both clarinet and piano.

Angela has been attending the University of Maryland since the fall of 2016 as part of their PhD program in Chemical Physics.  She began a research assistantship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in January of 2017.

Angela says that her current goals for the music program at our church are "to encourage congregational participation through music in new, exciting ways, and to bring our music ministry out into the community to share our faith and grow in musicianship."
